Abstract

Tomato flu is a viral infection caused by the Coxsackie virus A16 (a non-polio enterovirus), which is highly infectious and transmitted through nasal secretions, free-flowing fluids from blisters, and the fecal-oral route. The virus is commonly seen in the age group of 1-10 years and immunocompromised adults. It can be spread through close contact with the infected person. In the Kollam district of Kerala on May 6, 2022, the Tomato virus showed its ugly head. Kerala Health Department took preventive action to observe the spread of the viral infection and to block its further presence in other parts of India. The symptoms start with mild fever (100°F), skin rashes, and mouth soreness. One or two days after the fever begins a small red spot appears in the extremities which will change to a tomato-like red color blister and lead to an ulcer if it's not treated. It can be treated with antipyretics and isolation precautions.
