Abstract

Background of the study: Children constitute a large portion of the population in India. They are the priceless resources. “Today‟s children are builders of nation tomorrow”. Diarrheal diseases are one of top three causes of childhood death in the developing countries. About 80% of acute diarrhea is due to Rotavirus infection. They require special attention from the mother as well as the family members. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of teaching programme of under five mother‟s knowledge regarding Rotavirus diarrhea. Methods and Materials: A pre experimental one group pre test post test design was adopted for the study. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used to select 60 under five mothers from the PHC. Data were collected by an interview schedule using a structured knowledge questionnaire. Results: In pretest the knowledge mean of the participants was 17.37, whereas in post test it was 31.10 and the improvement was statistically significant at P ≤0.05. There was a significant association was found between educations, occupation, vaccination status against rotavirus and number of under-five children. Conclusion: In pretest 66.7% of the subjects had an inadequate knowledge where as in the posttest 65% of subjects had gained adequate knowledge and 35% had acquired moderate knowledge. This study finding indicates that there was effectiveness in the structured teaching programme on knowledge among mothers of under-five children regarding rotavirus diarrhea at selected rural PHC, Bangalore.
