Effectiveness of an Information Booklet on the Knowledge and Anxiety of Patients Undergoing Lumbar Puncture in a Selected Hospital, Bangalore

Abstract

Background of the study: Lumbar puncture is an indication for diagnostic, therapeutic and anaesthetic purposes. Patients undergoing invasive procedures will have anxiety that will disturb them emotionally, mentally, and physiologically. Administering the information booklet before the procedure improves knowledge and reduces anxiety among the subjects. Methods: Quasi-Experimental post-test only control group design. The population comprised of adult patients male and female (>18 years). The purposive Sampling technique was used. The sample size was 48 (24 in each group) Tool: Proforma to elicit baseline variables, Structured Questionnaire includes 20 questions to assess knowledge and 40 questions STAI (state-trait anxiety inventory) to assess anxiety. Results: The findings of the study revealed that the mean knowledge score in the study group (17.63) is higher than the control group (9.92) p<0.001 The mean anxiety score in the study group (26.04) is lower than the control group (31.38) p 0.022, hence it shows that there is an anxiety reduction and improved in knowledge in the study group. Conclusion: The information booklet administered to the study group showed significant improvement in knowledge and decrease anxiety as compared to the control group who just received normal routine information from the health care members.
