Abstract

Eye care is a major health issue mainly in third world countries where 90% blindness is reported. Cataract is the opacification or clouding of the lens of the eye. It is one of the leading causes of blindness and visual impairment in the world, hence the aim of the study was to determine the factors associated with the delay in seeking cataract treatment by patients visiting Sekuru Kaguvi Eye Unit. Methodology: A quantitative descriptive cross sectional study was employed and convenience sampling was used to select 40 participants who met the inclusion criteria after obtaining ethical approval. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was analysed and descriptive statistics were obtained using a computerised statistical Microsoft Excel 2016 to yield, percentages, ranges and frequency. Results: Socioeconomic and environmental factors like geographical location, age, availability of hospital funding and increase in age had a pivotal contribution in factors associated with delay in seeking cataract treatment. Discussion: The major factors that affected the most respondents were; long distances required to travel, having transport problems, shortage of money to pay for cataract treatment and the lack of knowledge and awareness concerning cataract and its treatment. Conclusion and Recommendations: The provision of eye health care and cataract removal services in small growth points and primitive parts of the country. There is also need for campaigns to promote and educate people around the nation about cataract and the advantages of seeking cataract treatment early.
