This study examined knowledge and utilization of time management skills among nurses in a healthcare institution in South East Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to determine the knowledge of nurses about time management, find out whether nurses have appropriate skills for effective time management in patient care and ascertain how effectively nurses apply the required management skills in patient care. The study was a descriptive survey. The study population included all nurses working in the healthcare institution at the time of conducting the study which summed up to 550. Using the stratified proportionate sampling technique, a total of 231 nurses were selected across the various units of the hospital. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire designed in line with the study objectives. Data collection was by direct delivery and retrieval method. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and the Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) version 23 was employed in the analytical process. Results revealed that out of the 231 respondents studied, 35(15.1%) had poor knowledge, 76(32.9%) had fair knowledge while 120(52.0%) had good knowledge of time management principles; 122(52.8%) to a low extent, 62(26.8%) to a moderate extent while 47(20.4%) to a high extent possess appropriate time management skills; 88(38.0%) apply time management in nursing care while 143(62.0%) do not practice effective time management in nursing care. The study concluded that although majority of the nurses were knowledgeable about time management in healthcare, only few apply the necessary time management skills in patient care. The need for adequate use of effective time management skills among nurses was recommended in the light of the present day nursing shortage and increase in number of patients accessing health care.
