Mobile Phone Use and Sleep Disturbance among Adolescents

Background: The present study was intended to assess the mobile phone use and sleep disturbances among adolescents. The main objectives of the study were to assess the mobile phone use among adolescents, assess sleep pattern disturbance among adolescents, determine the relationship between mobile phone use and sleep disturbance among adolescents, determine the association between mobile phone use and socio- personal variables among adolescents. Methodology: Descriptive correlational design was adopted. Sample consisted of 350 adolescents by multistage sampling from selected schools in Thiruvananthapuram. The tools used for the study were questionnaire to assess the socio-personal variables, modified mobile phone problem use scale and sleep disturbances scale. The technique used for data collection was self- report from adolescents. Result: There was statistically significant positive correlation between mobile phone use and sleep disturbance (r =0.499, p<0.01). Conclusion: Study highlights the need to explore interventions that may help to reduce the mobile phone use and maintain normal sleep pattern among adolescents.
