Chronic Complications of Diabetes and their Impact on the Patient

Diabetes can affect many parts of the body, leading to major and dangerous complications that can lead to death. These complications are of two types: acute complications, which are diabetic ketoacidosis, excessive rise in blood sugar, respiratory infection and gum disease and complications. Chronic high sugar level leads to mutilation to blood vessels, large vessel diseases lead to cardiovascular disease, accelerates atherosclerosis, which causes coronary artery disease, leading to angina or myocardial infarction, diabetic necrosis, stroke. While small blood vessel damage leads to microangiopathy, which can cause diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic encephalitis, diabetic neuropathy, which is one of the most serious complications of diabetes. That may eventually lead to ulceration of the foot and amputation. It occurs in approximately 70-60% of diabetic patients.
