Abstract

The aim of this work is to design and analysis of a vertical axis wind turbine to capture wind energy from moving vehicles. This energy is captured by the vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) placed on the centre of highways to create use of the vehicles occupancy each directions. A considerable quantity of wind energy is created because of the moving vehicles on the highways. This wind energy is utilised for the generation of power with the assistance of vertical axis wind turbines. Vertical axis turbine is put in on the centre of the roads, so the wind from either side can act tangentially in other way. This wind flow will depend on the speed and size of the vehicle. The amount of power generation is depends on the traffic density on the highways. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB Simulink software at different wind speed. This simulation consists of a helical type turbine with an electric generator attached to it directly via a coupling without the use of a gearbox allowing the system to be simple and applicable on a wide scale. The free energy available from the moving vehicles is utilized in commercial scale which is promising for further development in the renewable energy system.
