Abstract

Background: The present study was intended to assess the quality of life among wives of alcohol dependents. The main objectives of the study were to assess the quality of life among wives of alcohol dependents, determine the association between quality of life among wives of alcohol dependents and their socio demographic data and socio personal data of alcohol dependents. Methodology: Descriptive research design was adopted. 120 subjects were taken for the study using a purposive sampling technique from selected de-addiction centers in Thiruvananthapuram. The tool used for the study was rating scale to assess the quality of life in five domains. The technique used for data collection was structured interview method. Result: The study revealed that the mean score of quality of life was 180 with a standard deviation of 31.9. The majority of the subjects65.8% (79) had medium quality of life and 34.2% (41) had low quality of life, there was no one with high quality of life. A significant association was observed between quality of life and domicile, type of family, duration of stay with their husband, and loss of job of husband. The highlights of present study revealed that the physical, psychological and social quality of life are significantly lower and it suggested that wives of alcohol dependents have moderate to low quality of life. Conclusion: The study concluded that quality of life is compromised and stress is high among wives of alcohol dependents and it is miserable.
