Abstract

Stress was high compared with most other developing and emerging countries. Around 89 percent of the Indian population is reported to have strain that is higher than the global 86 percent averages. The study is based on police officers, whose employment is generally seen as extremely stressful, caught between the growing threat of violence on our streets, high demand on the part of people and increasing attention to the efficiency and integrity of the police.

Methodology: A descriptive study approach is used for study. Police Personnel from selected police regiments who were fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by using non-probability convenient sampling technique. Total 300 Police Personnel was included in the study. The data was collected from sample, by using stress assessment scale and Knowledge questionnaire on stress and its management. Prior to collect the data the tool was validated from 9 experts and confirmed reliable by pre and post test method by using Cronbach's Alpha. The collected data coded and tabulated for result analysis. 

Findings: Stress level of police personnel 150 (50%) police personnel had moderate stress, 150 (50%) police personnel had severe Stress. The aspect of Working condition followed by 69.52% with mean score 87.6 and standard deviation 6.75 and psychological stressors, 69.2% with mean score 87.2 and standard deviation 6.55 were the major factors for stress. The association of knowledge scores of Police personnel with selected personnel variables such as age, gender, religion, marital status, type of family, monthly income (in rupees), type of house, residence at present, occupation status of the spouse, area of posting and hours of overtime in a day showed statistical not significant association were as educational status and years of experience showed statistical significant association.

Conclusion: The study finding shows that, majority of the police personnel has moderate to severe stress and it’s alarming the severity of stress management among the police personnel. Though the police personnel had enough knowledge regarding prevention and management of stress they are failing to incorporate them.
