A Study to Assess the Adjustment Level among Newly Joined Students in Selected Colleges at Honavar, Uttar Kannada

Abstract

Background of the study: Certain factors are included as risk factors for problems in adjusting to the new environment, people, and practices when a student enters the new educational setting like coping ability, support systems, rules and regulations, educational materials and requirements, financial problems, social status differences, cultural differences, homesickness, social stressors related to communication skills, being pampered, health issues, etc. Methodology: A descriptive research design was used to accomplish the objective of the study i.e., to assess the level of adjustment among the newly joined students. The sample is 46 GNM students from SIIHS, Honavar, Karnataka, who were selected by simple random sampling technique. Collected data was collected by a self-administered Five-point Likert’s Scale. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics and interpreted appropriately. Results: The findings of this study reveal that analysis of the overall level of adjustment of the students concluded that 14(30.43%) were High and 32(69.56%) had moderate levels of adjustment. Chi- Square Test shows the association between the level of adjustment of the students and selected demographic variables such as Age in years 1.53 (P=9.46), Religion 2.2 (P=12.59), Native Place 9.62 (P=15.51), Birth Order 1.34 (P=9.49), Number of siblings 0.87 (P=9.49), Mother Tongue 2.26(P=18.31), Previous experience of hostel life 0.34 (P=5.99), duration (in years) of hostel life -0.68 (P=9.49), Developed friendship with anyone here 0.09(P=5.99), the reason for not developing new friendship 0.13(P=12.59) at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusion: A descriptive study was undertaken to assess the level of adjustment of the students among 1st year GNM of SIIHS at Honavar, Karnataka. The findings of this study reveal that analysis of the overall level of adjustment of the students concluded that 14(30.43%) had a high level of adjustment and 32(69.56%) had a moderate level of adjustment.
