With more cars on the road, controlling traffic lights becomes a big problem that contributes to congestion and is a primary cause of ambulance delays. To control traffic lights and shorten ambulance delays, this calls for an intelligent system. With the use of the proposed traffic management system, the need to manually regulate traffic will not be required. The proposed system is also time efficient when compared to conventional traffic management systems. It also reduces the time taken by an ambulance at the traffic light by detecting such vehicles. In most cities throughout the world, the overburdened road is a serious issue which turned into a menace for the locals. The causes of traffic-related issues include faulty traffic lights, delays in the signal, and not managed timings of traffic lights. The pre-programmed traffic signals cannot sense the traffic burden and operate independently of it. This increases the demand of developing faster autonomous systems capable of managing such scenarios. The traditional traffic signal system is based on a constant management time for traffic, thus we presented a smart system employing Arduino and ultrasonic sensors where green signal timings adjust automatically following traffic density. Our aim is to develop a traffic signal that can sense the traffic load in real-time and can respond accordingly. The traffic load at intersections would be detected depending on which the required adjustment of the signal time would be made. An ARDUINO will be used as the microcontroller of this project. To detect traffic load an IR based system will be used mounted on poles at intersection that will receive the signal when the automobiles pass by.
