Abstract

Population expansion and economic growth have raised the demand for reliable and safe power sources. Inverters help to ensure optimal economic dispatch during normal operating and micro grid resilience during extreme weather events. This paper presents the design of a low cost and high efficient quasi-square inverter and three phase inverter with protection circuits from over temperature and from reverse connection. The design based on power electronic devices. The hearts of the design are IC4017 and IC555. The operation of the inverters are based on the switching of power semiconductor devices. 555 oscillator trigger the IC4017 at frequency of 200Hz for the single phase inverter and 300Hz for the three phase inverter. MOSFET gate driver has been used to drive the gate of a power MOSFET, and Optocouplers to regulate the pulses. Low pass filter to reject the high order harmonics have been used to gain sine wave single phase and three phase. The applications of these inverters are for stand-alone connection in a micro-grid system. Simulation results proved that simple and effective design of a quasi-square inverter and three phase inverter with protection circuits has been implemented successfully.
