Abstract

The Rohingya crisis, which began in August 2017, has significantly impacted the relationship between Myanmar and Bangladesh. The large-scale displacement of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh has strained the diplomatic ties between the two nations, leading to a range of issues in the areas of transportation, trade, and security. The strained relationship has led to an impasse regarding the repatriation of the refugees, with two attempts at repatriation failing so far. The lack of progress on this issue has further escalated tensions between the two countries, with both sides blaming each other for the ongoing crisis.

This research article aims to examine the impact of the Rohingya crisis on the relationship between Myanmar and Bangladesh, with a particular focus on the areas of transportation, trade, and security. The transportation system between the two countries has been severely affected, with the suspension of several bus and train routes due to security concerns. The crisis has also disrupted cross-border trade, with increased border control measures leading to significant delays and losses for traders on both sides. Additionally, the crisis has raised concerns about security along the border, with allegations of cross-border infiltration and smuggling.

The article suggests several ways to improve the situation, including the establishment of a joint committee to address the issues related to transportation, trade, and security. It also recommends the formation of a joint commission to oversee the repatriation of the Rohingya refugees, with a focus on addressing the underlying causes of the crisis, such as discrimination and lack of citizenship rights. The article concludes that a concerted effort from both Myanmar and Bangladesh, with support from the international community, is required to address the Rohingya crisis and restore the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
