The applications of engineering nanotechnology are wide-ranging and are included in many engineering, industrial, military, medical, agricultural and other fields, for example, a large group of raw materials are improved to change the physical properties of small or nanoscale sizes. Nanoparticles, for example, benefit from a significant increase in the surface area to volume ratio. For example, traditional polymers can be reinforced by using nanoparticles found in new materials, which may be used as lightweight alternatives to metals. As a result, an increase in the social benefit of nanoparticles can be expected. These nano-reinforced materials will enable a reduction in weight with an increase in stability and an improvement in functionality. In addition, practical nanotechnology necessarily represents the increasing ability to precisely manipulate matter to previously impossible scales, offering a range of possibilities previously unimaginable to others – so it is not surprising that few areas of human technology have been excluded from the benefits of using application of nanotechnology.
