Globally, there has been a significant increase in reported cases of human and material losses due to lightning-induced over-voltages in recent times. This puts lightning strikes among the major causes of overvoltage with consequent loss of human lives, failure of valuable power system equipment and loss of huge revenue. Electrical installations and equipment are situated in the open and are particularly exposed to overvoltage hazards arising from lightning strikes. It is imperative therefore to ensure that equipment and indeed the entire electrical infrastructure are effectively protected from a lightning-induced overvoltage to mitigate losses and achieve uninterrupted electricity supply to the consumers. Lightning arresters afford adequate protection against lightning strikes. Its appropriate selection, installation, earthing and maintenance is critical to ensure optimal performance and protection of distribution networks. This paper studied various lightning arrester types and the unique functionalities and recommends proactive measures and procedures necessary for the proper selection, installation and maintenance of lighting arresters to achieve adequate and effective protection for electric power systems against damages arising from lightning occurrences in line with global best practices.
