Abstract

Electricity is the major source of power for a country's economic activities. In Bangladesh,
electricity production is mostly based on the existing reserve of conventional energy sources
as fossil fuel like gas, coal, oil etc. which is insufficient to meet the present and near future
power demand. Moreover, most of the power plants are natural gas based which will be
phased out in the future. In addition, these energy sources are environmentally harmful and
require a massive area of land. All these presages that Bangladesh will face a catastrophic
power crisis in the future. It has already seen all over the world that power generation from
nuclear energy facilitates to optimize energy mix and diversify a countryʹs energy source to
get out of the chronic power shortage problem. Realizing the global trends toward nuclear
power, electricity generation from a nuclear power plant could be the best option for
Bangladesh to keep pace with the growing demand and overcome energy and power crisis.
