Abstract

A case study was carried out on Envoy Hotel located in Federal Capital Territory (FCT),
Abuja in Nigeria, to investigate the economics and energy advantages of installing lighting
BMS in the facility. Energy audit and comparative analysis of the hotel building with BMS
installed and without BMS installed was also investigated. Also, assessment of the volume of
emissions prevented from harming the environment through the use of BMS for Envoy
Hotel’s lighting system was carried out, and it was discovered that Mother Nature was
spared about 220,000 pounds of toxic emissions over a 5-year period. In conclusion, it was
ascertained that BMS though expensive can over time provide significant savings both in cost
and energy if properly managed. Hence, for a country such as Nigeria where power
generation lies between 3000−4000 MW for a population of about 200 million, adoption of
BMS in commercial, industrial and residential buildings will go a long way in addressing
power shortages in the country through use of energy efficient measures to control buildings
electro-mechanical equipment.
