Abstract

Single-wheel cultivators are an essential agricultural tool for small farmers as they help to reduce labour costs and improve crop yields. However, many small farmers find it difficult to afford the high cost of commercial cultivators. This paper presents an economical design for a single-wheel cultivator that can be easily constructed using locally available materials. The design consists of a single wheel connected to a frame that can be adjusted for different row widths. The cultivator also has adjustable tines that can be positioned to control the depth of cultivation. The tines are made from flat steel bars that are bent into shape and welded to a mounting plate. The single-wheel cultivator was tested in a field experiment, and it was found to be effective in controlling weeds and improving soil aeration. The cultivator was also found to be easy to use and required minimal maintenance. The total cost of materials for the single-wheel cultivator was found to be less than half the cost of commercially available cultivators. Therefore, this design has the potential to be a cost-effective solution for small farmers who want to improve their crop yields without incurring high labor costs. In conclusion, the single-wheel cultivator presented in this paper offers an economical and practical solution for small farmers who wish to improve their agricultural practices. By reducing labour costs and increasing crop yields, this cultivator has the potential to improve the livelihoods of small farmers and contribute to sustainable agriculture.
