Abstract

Plants are used by human beings since earlier times for medicine and food. There are some research are carried out to find a suitable treatment for mankind through new drug delivery systems. However herbal medicaments also require modification for sustained release. By using modern methods protection from toxicity, improved stability, and bioavailability of herbal preparations, this review gives information about new techniques used for better safety and efficacy.

Recently the advanced in the understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodyanmic behaviour of drug have of offer a more rational approach to the development of optimal drug delivery system. Now it’s appreciable that future success in drug delivery research will largely be result of multidisciplinary efforts. If any therapeutic agent that can be efficacious and safe using and improved drug delivery system represent both lucrative marketing opportunities for pharmaceutical company and advancement in the treatment of disease of mankind. An ideally designed drug delivery system delivers a specified amount of drug to targeted particular site at an appropriate time and rate as dictated desired by the etiological and physiological needs of body.

Conventional pharmaceutical dosage form is incapable of controlling the rate of drug delivery to targeted site. As a result the distribution of drug in non-targeted tissue and body fluids necessitate therapeutic dosage that could exceed the amount required in targeted cell.

The novel drug delivery system is carriers which maintain the drug concentration in therapeutic range for longer period of time and also in addition may deliver the content to the site of action if so desired as per requirements.
