Since Indian economy is an agrarian economy, land continues to be a source of livelihood for the majority of people and considered as the most precious asset. So, procurement of land in urban areas for development purposes is relatively toughest task in recent times. So, there is a need to strike a balance between the need for land for development activities and the need to protect the interests of those impacted by the acquisition of land. Even though, different models are being practicing in India for procurement, planning and development of land for various development projects, this paper mainly focuses on two popular models of land procurement i.e., Land Acquisitions, and Land Pooling/Readjustment. Literature review reveals that only a few states in India have initiated innovative land management practices. The dream of emerging as sophisticated nation, building modern cities, establishing top-notch infrastructure, and promoting vibrant industry will not be a reality unless land is available with free and full consent of land owners for development purposes.
