Abstract

Statement of the Problem: A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge of Staff Nurses Regarding Nursing Interventions to Promote Sleep Among the Patients in ICU in Selected Hospitals at Mysore. Objectives: 1. To assess the pretest knowledge of the staff nurses, 2. To administer structured teaching Programme, 3. To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme, 4. To find out association between the knowledge of staff nurses with selected demographical variables. Methods: The research method adopted for this research was evaluative research approach. The pre-experimental one group pretest and posttest design was used to assess the effectiveness of the STP, total number of 50 staff nurses who fulfilled sampling criteria was selected in the data collection process by non-probability convenient sampling technique. The socio demographic data was developed along with (30) Structured knowledge questionnaires in the form of multiple choice questions. The reliability of the tool found to be effective at 0.9. Results and Findings: The calculated value of the mean post test score of the group (20.64) was higher than the mean pretest score (8.30) of the same group. The mean difference between [re test score and post test score was significant at 0.05% level as the t=18.83. Conclusion: From the findings of the present study, it is concluded that the level of knowledge of staff nurses regarding nursing intervention to promote sleep among patients in ICU was inadequate during the pre-test assessment. However, the findings of the post-test in the group, the level of knowledge has improved. The improvement is due to the administration of the STP. Therefore the knowledge of the staff nurses can be further improved by providing on-going educational programmes.
