Safety in Ostomy Care

Abstract

Surgical opening created in the body for the discharge of body wastes is called as ostomy. A stoma is a hole made on the abdomen that can be joined to either ureter, small bowel or large bowel.The site of a stoma, whether temporary or permanent, plays an essential role in the rehabilitation of the patient. Major problems can arise if patients are unable to perform self care, the stoma is difficult to visualize or if sore skin occurs. Stoma site should be performed by a Stoma Care Nurse Specialist (SCNS) or an experienced nurse who has undergone training. The site selectedmust be clearly marked with a permanent marker pen and covered with a transparent adhesive dressing to prevent wearing.
