“Pain is the subjective experience of an individual. The pain is a complex experience that can involve physical, emotional and cognitive components. Thus, we aimed to conduct this quasi-experimental study to determine the impact of topical anesthetic cream (PRILOX) on pain of the patients undergoing IV cannulation admitted in Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Patel Nagar, Dehradun. Non-equivalent control group post-test only design was used. 60 patients who need an IV line were selected for the study and 30 patients each were allocated conveniently to both the groups i.e., 30 to experimental and 30 to control group. Numerical pain rating scale was used to determine the pain experience during IV cannulation. A mean pain score of 22.7% was found in the experimental group while it was 51% in the control group. The study findings revealed a significant difference in the mean pain scores of the patients in the experimental and control group. Thus, topical anesthetic cream was found effective to minimize the pain experience during the IV cannulation procedure.
