To Assess the Level of Social Skills Among Schizophrenic Patients at Selected Hospitals, Chennai

Abstract

Schizophrenia is linked to a wide range of deviant behaviours, assessment results vary substantially depending on the type and stage of the illness. The person may show signs of diminished emotional expression, impaired concentration, and social functioning, as well as a loss of function. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of social skills. Among Schizophrenic Patients at Selected Hospitals, Chennai, Descriptive quantitative research design was adopted in this study. Study was conducted among schizophrenic patients at Selected Hospitals,  Chennai. Convenience sampling technique was used to select 50 schizophrenic patients. Modified Sale  for Assessment of Social Skills was used to assess the level of social skills among participants after the content validity. The present study assessed the the level of social skills among schizophrenic patients and it was founded that Most of them 46 (92.0 %) had inadequate level of social skill and four (8.0%) of them had modrately adequate level of Social Skills. Mean value 41.68 and standard deviation was 7.865 for the level of social skills among schizophrenic patients at Selected Hospital.

The present study proves that schizophrenic patients have inadequate level of social skills. It also helps them to live in the community independently by gaining adequate skills like communication, group participation, self care [brushing, bathing etc], and household work.
