Abstract

Background: The present study was intended to assess the health related quality of life and overall life satisfaction among persons with chronic mental illness. The objectives of the study were to assess the health related quality of life among persons with chronic mental illness, assess the overall life satisfaction among persons with chronic mental illness and to find out the relationship between health related quality of life and overall life satisfaction among persons with chronic mental illness. Methodology: Descriptive correlational design was adopted. Sample consisted of 99 persons with chronic mental illness from selected wards of Thiruvananthapuram district by multistage sampling technique. The tool used for the study was interview schedule to assess the socio-personal and clinical data, RAND SF 36 and quality of life enjoyment and satisfaction questionnaire short form. Result: the findings of the present study revealed that mental component of health related quality of life was less and overall life satisfaction was poor among persons with chronic mental illness. conclusion: Study highlights the need to explore interventions that may help for improving health related quality of life and overall life satisfaction such as rehabilitation activities such as yoga, routine training, light physical exercises, group discussion, patient empowerment program, social skills, work therapy, individual and family counseling are used.
