Effectiveness of Educational Games on Communicable Diseases Upon Learning Outcome Among the Nursing Students at Chennai

Abstract

An educational game is a physical or mental competition played according to specific rules to entertain or reward the student or participant. A game designed specifically for student learning can greatly motivate self-learning and problem-solving skills. The objective is to assess the knowledge of nursing students on communicable diseases, assess the effectiveness of educational game on communicable diseases among the Nursing students to determine the correlation between overall academic performance and knowledge on communicable diseases among the control and experimental group of nursing students and to assess the level of acceptability of educational game among the experimental group. This study is a true experimental research design and systematic random sampling- (Odd and Even method) was used. Data was collected by pretested and validated multiple choice questionnaire on Communicable diseases and rating scale on level of acceptability of educational game using google forms through WhatsApp and E-mails. The results revealed a significant difference in post-test mean knowledge scores on communicable diseases between control (M=11.48/25 & SD =4.03) and experiment group (M = 12.96/25 & SD =3.42) of Nursing students with ‘t’ value of 1.97 (p <0.05). Educational games as teaching tool on communicable diseases was highly acceptable by 51.03% and acceptable by 46.93% and not acceptable by only 2.04% students in experimental group. There was no correlation between overall academic performance and the knowledge scores on Communicable diseases (p> 0.05) in control and experimental group of nursing students.
