Effectiveness of Receptive Music Therapy on Stress and Anxiety among First Semester B.Sc. Nursing Students in Kerala

Abstract

Adolescence is the most important stream of the community for those who pursue studies for the accomplishment of their career. The most important aspect of Stress and anxiety rules among college students concerning their academics. As soon as stress is perceived students experience physical and psychological impairment harmfully or becomes severe. Methods to trim down stress students often comprise time management, social support, and positive appraisal. Music therapy can be well thought out as an effective way of treating stress and anxiety among students. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of receptive music therapy on stress and anxiety among first-semester BSc nursing students in Kannur. The objective of the study is to assess the effect of receptive therapy on the reduction of stress and anxiety and find out the association between selected demographic variables. The conceptual framework used for the study was Roy’s adaptation model. One group pretest-post-test design was adopted for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used.50 samples were taken for the study. After the pretest receptive music therapy is given, and then the post-test is conducted. The pretest mean score was 23.2, posttest mean score was 6.48. The mean is 16.72, the standard deviation is 8.86 and the mean percentage is 33.40%. The Pretest score is higher than the post-test score. Hence it is concluded that significant reduction in mental stress and anxiety after giving receptive music therapy, so receptive music therapy is very effective, there is a significant association between the level of stress and anxiety with demographic variables like the nature of family. The healing effect of music therapy can have an immensely soothing effect on our mind and body, especially leisurely, quiet classical music. This type of music can have a beneficial effect on physiological functions, slow the pulse and heart rate, lower blood pressure and decrease the level of stress hormones.
