Abstract

A COVID-19new variant B.1.1.529 was identified on 24, 2021, which was named as Omicron. The virus can mutate several times which is making it matter of concern for healthcare facilities. The transmissibility rate of omicron virus is relatively high both in vaccinated and unvaccinated subjects. The virus had capacity of mutations, more than 30 times in its spike protein. The unprecedented surge of Omicron cases is alarming for the world, because this would cause a burden on health care systems and government following recent COVID-19 outbreak. The overall risk is high in Omicron virus as compared to delta variant. Varied symptoms of Omicron virus makes it difficult to diagnose it in early stages. However, COVID vaccination and existing advisory on preventing the spread of the virus, including physical distancing of 1meter, wearing a proper sealed mask, regular handwashing and keeping indoor areas well ventilated are important factors in preventing Omicron virus infections. Standard infection control practices and proper barrier nursing techniques are important in preventing Omicron virus infections in hospital settings.
