Assessment of Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Organ Donation Among Nursing Staff and Nursing Students- A Comparative Study

Abstract

A comparative study was done to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation among nursing staff and nursing students. The study was carried out at DM WIMS Medical College Hospital, Wayanad using convenient sampling technique, 45 BSc nursing students and 45 nursing staffs were enrolled for the study. A Semi structured questionnaire to assess knowledge (29 items) and modified Likert scale (16 items) to assess attitude were administered. The results revealed that that majority (78%) of nursing staffs and students (100%) belongs to the age group of 20-30 years. It is noted that 31%of nursing staff got information about organ donation from curriculum whereas 33% of nursing students from television. The majority of the students and staffs had average knowledge that is 89% and 80% respectively. 60% of staffs and 73% of students had positive attitude towards organ donation. 40% of staffs and 27% of students unveil neutral attitude. There is no significant difference in mean knowledge and attitude score of staffs and students with p value at 0.05 level of significance. It was deduced that most of the students had average knowledge about organ donation with neutral or positive attitude
