Abstract

Background and Objectives: Sexual abuse is also referred as molestation, is forcing undesired sexual behavior by one person upon another. The abuse can occur at any age which includes childhood period and adolescent period. There may be spousal sexual abuse, position of power, child sexual abuse, and sexual abuse of people with developmental disabilities etc. Methods: A Quantitative Evaluative one group pre-test post-test pre experimental design was used for the present study. With the purposive sampling technique 40 study participants were selected from A.V.K Pre-University College, Hassan. Data were collected by using structured knowledge questionnaire with 35 items and structured attitude scale with 20 items. Reliability of structured knowledge questionnaire was found to be 0.684 and that of structured attitude scale was found to be 0.98. Structured teaching programme was administered after conducting pre-test and the post-test was conducted after 7 days. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistical technique. Results: The data analysis revealed that the mean% of post-test knowledge score (80.34%) was higher than that of pre-test knowledge score (42.41%). The calculated paired ‘t’ test value (t=12.88) is greater than the table value (P>0.05, df 39) which is suggestive of significant difference between mean pre-test and post-test knowledge scores. Post-test knowledge scores were positively correlated with post-test attitude scores. The calculated x2 value revealed significant association between age and nature of stay with their post-test knowledge scores. The mean% of post-test attitude score (84%) was higher than that of pre-test attitude score (48.45%). The calculated paired ‘t’ test value (t=14.69) is greater than the table value (P>0.05, df 39) which is suggestive of significant difference between mean pre-test and post-test attitude scores. Post-test knowledge scores were positively correlated with post-test attitude scores. The calculated x2 value revealed that there is no significant association between demographic variables with their post-test attitude scores. Interpretation & Conclusion: The study concluded that STP on sexual abuse and its prevention was an effective method of enhancing the knowledge and attitude of adolescent girls and this helps in the prevention of sexual abuse.
