A Descriptive Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Diabetes Mellitus Among the B Sc Nursing Students at Selected Nursing Colleges in Palakkad District

Aim: Diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders charecterised by a high blood sugar level over a period of long time. Diabetes occurs due to the improper production of insulin or the body cells are responding improperly. Diabetes common all over the world, but common in developed countries. The goal of diabetic education is to help people to take effective measures to manage and control the illness along with improved well-being. In this study we are trying to analyze the knowledge of BSc nursing students regarding diabetes mellitus. The knowledge of students regarding diabetes mellitus is very crucial to manage the patient with diabetes mellitus. Statement of the Problem: descriptive to assess the knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus among the BS Nursing students at selected nursing colleges in Palakkad district. Objectives: 1. Assess the knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus among Bask Nursing students. 2. To find the association between the knowledge of diabetes mellitus with demographic variables. Methodology: A quantitative research approach of nonexperimental descriptive research design was used in this study. The study was conducted among B. Sc. Nursing students in selected nursing colleges at Palakkad. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria, selected 60 samples and applied the questionnaire with 20 questions. The score was divided in to three category such as good, average and poor. Data Analysis and Interpretation: The collected data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The demographic variables are evaluated by descriptive method and the association analyzed by determining chi square. Result and Discussion: A total of 60 BSc Nursing students were participated in this study. Around 27% have good knowledge, 70% have average knowledge and 3% Bsc nursing students having poor knowledge about diabetes mellitus. The study reveals that there is significant association between the demographic variables such as religion and source of knowledge and no association with gender, age, type of family and previous knowledge. The study suggested to conduct further research study to escalate the assumptions. Conclusion: The study reveals that the students have previous knowledge about diabetes and it should be updated by awareness programmes and educational activities.
