University study and work are quite stressful. Natural space can alleviate stress as well as can add value to a campus for achieving a healthy and sustainable environment. This paper explores the benefit of natural spaces for a healthy campus environment and also the importance of incorporating natural green spaces into a compact urban campus targeting stress alleviation which will also play a vital role in urban climate and environment as a source of greenery. Furthermore, natural and open green spaces inspire natural ventilation, thus reducing energy consumption and ensuring sustainability. Literature reviews demonstrate the impact of natural and open green spaces on on-campus students. A comparison of three university campuses with different urban contexts and natural settings is conducted to identify the significance and applicability of natural space. High-density surroundings may limit the size of open space and impede circulation and accessibility on a compact campus; on the other hand, a small open and green space may provide its users with more intimate contact with natural restorative elements. Finally, an analysis of the case-studied site area is given and a resolution is presented for prioritizing open and green spaces and natural features in a compact urban campus during the planning stage.
