Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess the comparative behavior of vertical stiffness members; columns of buildings having different column shapes; square, circular and rectangular, under the seismic loadings. This paper represents the study to identify the influences of column sizes and shapes as its contribution to the natural time period of the building. As an adopted methodology, the seismic performance of the reinforced cement concrete framed buildings up to G+10 storey has been evaluated with the different sizes and shapes (keeping the cross-sectional area unchanged for the different shapes) of the column. For analysis of buildings, commercially available software STAAD.Pro has been used and the tabulated results of the time period of buildings have been presented as the results as per different configuration of structure under different mode of vibration. The study recommends evaluating the dynamic behavior of the shape of the considered structural member for response quantity is better than merely providing the member fulfilling the current need of the structure under architectural considerations.
