The Active Suspension System (ASS) in a vehicle helps to reduce the vibration and increases
the ride quality. It produces a control force which is acting against the vibration. The
effectiveness of the ASS is based on the types of controller used. In this paper, a half car
model with ASS is considered for analysis. To reduce the body acceleration and to increase
the ride quality, the Fractional Order Terminal Sliding Mode Controller (FOTSMC) is
proposed and its performance is compared with Terminal Sliding Mode Controller (TSMC),
Fractional Order Sliding Mode Controller (FOSMC) and passive system. Two types of road
disturbance such as single bump and random road are given to the system and performance
of the controllers are analysed. From the time responses, Root Mean Square (RMS) and
frequency weighted RMS, FOTSMC performs better than the FOSMC, TSMC, and passive
system.
