Abstract

High data service requirement applications are on the rise in recent years. The evolving applications of mobile telecommunication, internet-based consumer services and many other evolving mobile cellular and wireless applications demand improved wireless network facility for effectiveness. When the existing wireless network standards like Wifi are employed in such huge data applications, they do not meet up to the required standard, thereby inducing poor QoS to the wireless network users. The evolution of Wi-max being a last mile wireless network standard for huge data applications in mobile cellular network stands to be the primary solution. This study seeks to apply the Wi-max Network Service to obtain improved mobile user experience in the Rivers State University. The study approaches the Wi-max network with a fixed orientation, prioritizing areas on the campus with more users, physical network dimensioning planning help in the siting of Wi-max base station as well as to determine the required cell coverage area for suitable coverage. The heterogeneous nature of the campus (being mixture of both urbanized and rural) is factored into the cost hata model. The network dimensioning resulted to two base station for the entire campus.
