Colchicine has Antidiabetic Effect and May be an Option for Type 2 Diabetes Management

Objectives: The aim of this study is to show that if oral colchicine by a dose of 0.5 mg twice daily has an anti-diabetic effect in comparison to metformin and control. Design: A randomized, controlled trial, 6-month trial Materials and Methods:150 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients were randomized into 3 parallel groups, had been monitored in a private clinic, each group 50 patients number, with 30 females and 20 males after written consent from all patients. The ages of all patients were between 35 and 55 years. Results: The results show that both colchicine and metformin have a lowering effect on A1C with a statistically significant p-value of less than 0.0001. Conclusion: Colchicine may be considered as an option for type 2 diabetes management.
