In today’s world, Human infections are caused by parasitic worms or so-called helminths. There is a wide category of different kinds of helminths. To treat these infections caused by worms we commonly use anthelmintic drugs. There are wide ranges of anthelmintic drugs; some drugs are Albendazole, Ivermectin, Peprazine, etc. which work on different worms like Nematodes, Cestodes, etc. Here, we are going to see the efficacy or activity of one the anthelmintic drugs that lie under the category of benzimidazoles and its mechanism of action. There are few adverse effects of this drug but not very serious are seen.
A drug used in this experiment is mebendazole, a marketed preparation of 100mg, and its effects will be observed on the earthworm model in groups with control and standard. In this case, earthworms are used because they share common features to that helminths and are easily available. The results of paralysis and death in different concentrations of the drug on earthworms will show the effect of the drug. The time interval between earthworm groups is also observed with different concentrations of the drug.
