As the quest for civilization is on forward, the thirst for power is increasing. This has led to the utilization of renewable energies in the power sector. At this juncture, the Microgrids and smart grids have evolved, which are located nearer to the load centres. The power supply from Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) has reduced Green House Gases (GHGs). These innovations have drawn attention to the reduction of Green House Gases. However, these renewable energy sources (RESs) are intermittent and pose many challenges to the dispatchable power from Microgrid. To regulate voltage and frequency, the battery energy system, fuel cells, and supercapacitors in Microgrid have come forward to obviate this phenomenon. The microgrid reliability is attained by utilizing the latest control technologies in interfacing inverters. A thorough review is undertaken in this paper, for proper control and operation of microgrids in a three-phase AC system with the latest inverter topologies, which were in use, which will be useful to researchers in this direction, to ahead with their research work and succeed.
