Assessing the Fashion of Instructional Material Resources Management in Secondary Schools of Kaffa Zone

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the current practices and challenges of instructional material supply and management in selected Secondary schools of Kaffa zone, in SNNPRS. To determine sample from population, multi-stage sampling technique was employed. Purposive sampling was used to select Kaffa zone among 14 zones and 22 town administrations that were found in South nation nationality and peoples’ regional state. 50% of the sample woredas and town (6 woreda and 1 town administration) were considered in this study. Accordingly, a random sampling technique was employed to select one secondary school from each woreda and town and this comprises a total of seven secondary schools. Within the seven secondary schools, there were 21 administrative staffs, 422 teachers and 37 supportive staffs comprise a total of 480 populations and considered as population of the study. To determine sample from population, Yamane (1967) formula was used. Out of this population, an overall population of administrative staffs and supportive staffs were selected during comprehensive sampling. While 160 sample teachers were selected using proportionate sampling method. Then, a total of 218 sample respondents were considered in this study. Questionnaires, key informant interviews, focus group discussion (FGD) and personal observation were used as an instrument for primary data collection. Secondary sources of data were gathered from documents of schools, publications, journals, books, and reports written on community participation and related literatures. The data from respondents were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The practice of instructional material management functions such as selection of materials, handling, distribution and inventory control of instructional materials, utilization, maintenance
and storage was found to be in a low extent. Based on these findings, it is recommended that
Secondary schools in the Kaffa zone should better do more to increase the level of school Community participations in all aspect’s education in relation to materials supply and management. These findings may enable the government and other stake holders to take appropriate action to ensure there are enough facilities with good supplying and managing in order to improve the quality of education in secondary schools.
