This article reviews the optimal design of strain gauge-based S-beams, double ended shear beams, rectangular beams, and Pancake type load cells, and studies the effects of key dimensional parameters on sensitivity and volume. Simple models of these load cells are considered for the finite element method (FEM), and the Taguchi method along with grey relational analysis is used to perform multi-objective optimization to find the best combination of parameters for maximum sensitivity and minimum volume. The highest gray relation coefficient (GRC) is regarded as the best parameter combination. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to obtain the contribution of each parameter to the performance characteristics, and the results were compared with the experimental method of photo elasticity
