River is one of the most important natural entities in surface water hydrology. It is a source of water for water supply, irrigation, hydro-power, and for navigation. In Indian context certain rivers are considered to be pious and are worshipped and people take dip in the rivers on certain periodic occasions. Unfortunately rivers have been are used as a sink for waste water and industrial effluents. City of Ujjain is deemed to be one of the most pious cities of India and is situated on the banks of Holy River Kshipra. The river flows through the city and floods as well as low flows affect the bank area. The hydraulic modelling of flow in the river is required to ascertain the damage due to flood and as well as maintenance of minimum level of flow for water quality. In the present study HEC-RAS (Hydraulic Engineering Center River Analysis System) is used to model the hydraulics of the river Kshipra at Ujjain. Study showed that the cross-section end points should extend vertically for the computed water surface. Otherwise it will become the reason of overflow the flood water through Khipra river basin. The result table of hydraulic properties and all profile plots can also be used in future planning of developmental works.
