Abstract

Water quality index (WQI) is one of the most effective, simple and an easily understandable tool to assess water quality for its suitability for various purposes water quality is assessed on the basis of calculated water quality indices. Groundwater based on the data of 60 samples collected from Erode district, was assessed using parameters like Electrical conductivity,pH, calcium, magnesium, sodium, total hardness, chlorides, sulphates, total dissolved solids, alkalinityand turbidity by the standard methods and procedures. WQI provides an easy and rapid method of monitoring of water quality. Drinking water at almost all the locations were found to be highly contaminated, except at few locations and to give priority for the required treatment to the location (which is severely affected) and also to select the type of treatment required.
