Determination of Spatial Distribution of Deep Boreholes in the Middle Aquifer in Monguno Town, Monguno Local Government Area, Borno State, Nigeria
Keywords:
Aquifer, Borehole, Deep, Monguno, SpatialAbstract
The study determined the spatial distribution
of deep boreholes in the Middle aquifer in
Monguno. The inadequate water supply is
also poor in terms of quality as exposure to
the atmosphere (oxygen) reduces the
palatability and aesthetic value of the water
from the user’s perspective due to the
yellowish-brown coloration which is unusual
under ideal circumstances. Therefore, there is
a need to determine the spatial distribution of
the deep boreholes in the Middle aquifer of
Monguno Local Government area since it is
the predominant source of water supply. The
specific objectives of this study were to
determine the spatial distribution of deep
boreholes in the Middle aquifer in the area.
The method used in the study includes
primary data collected using measurement,
observation, and Field surveys conducted for
a site acquaintance to all existing deep
borehole sites in Monguno and taking their
geographical coordinates using GPS
equipment (Model: Garmin GPSMAP-64s
Receivers). The Borehole coordinates were
plotted on the geographical map of the study
area using ‘’Google Earth and ArcGIS’’
software to position them and show the
spatial distribution respectively to have a
pictorial view of the area. The major finding
of the research was that sampled water points
show the concentration of parameters and
possible health implications of using water for
drinking exceeding acceptable WHO (World
Health Organization) and Nigerian Standard
of Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) limits.
Based on the findings, the following
recommendations were made; Stakeholders
in water supply should support communities
with water treatment consumables such as
alum and filter cloths so that water treatment
can also be done at the household level
through coagulation and filtration.
