Stabilize black cotton Soil by HDPE Plastic
Keywords:
Black cotton soil, HDPE plastic, Engineering propertiesAbstract
The performance of roads is often poor after every season and in most cases these pavements
show cracking, differential settlement. In Maharashtra state most of part is covered by black
cotton soil. The Black Cotton soil is very hard when it is dry and loses its strength increase
moisture content. Stability of Black Cotton soil is an acute problem that poses several
challenges wherever dealt with. Various researches are conducted to improve the
engineering characteristics of such expansive soils. Usually, the problematic soils are either
removed and replaced by better quality material or stabilized using additives. Demonstrate
the potential of reclaimed high density polyethylene strips (HDPE) as soil reinforcement for
improving engineering performance of sub grade soil. HDPE strips obtained from waste
plastic pipe were mixed with the soil. A series of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test will be
carried out on reinforced soil by variation of percentage of HDPE strips and Aspect ratio.
The feasibility of adding HDPE waste plastic is concluded for improving the engineering
properties of Black Cotton soils.
