Abstract

Black cotton soil acts as a poor foundation material for pavement construction due to its low bearing capacity and shrinkage characteristic. For improving load bearing capacity of black cotton soil variety of ground improvement techniques had been applied in past. In present study Rubber tyre shred (RTS) from waste has been selected as reinforcement material. RTS is treated with chemical solutions, so that an adhesive property can be developed between soil particles and RTS. Treated RTS has been mixed with parent black cotton soil in different percentage i.e. 6%, 8%, 10%, and 14% by weight of soil. The samples were subjected to Standard Proctor and un-soaked California bearing ratio. The study leads to a conclusion in which significant improvement in the bearing capacity parameters has been observed. The results obtained are compared with parent soil samples and conclusions are drawn towards the effectiveness of RTS in black cotton soil. It has been concluded from the study that rubber tyre shred can be work as a good reinforcement material for soil.
