Abstract

Water supply is one of the most important factors for development of any rural areas as the major share of the population in the developing countries dwell in rural areas. In order to ensure the availability of adequate amount of good quality water, it becomes imperative in modern society to plan, to manufacture reasonable water flexibly conspires which may give water to the different areas of network as per their requests and necessities. During the past decade, Geo-spatial techniques such as GIS and Remote Sensing (RS) have been used widely in different branch and media of research, especially, those researches that involves the geo-referenced spatial data. Design of water supply system is one of the issues that can be analyzed using GIS and RS. A linked GIS and RS facilitate selection of the source of water for the water supply system, assessment of the water quality, site selection for intake structures, water treatment plants and pumping station, Network analysis and design of pipe line path which includes water line, positioning of overhead tank with consideration of ground surface properties, land use changing and ownership. A detailed analysis was made based on sources of water, distance from the household, quality, quantity, demand and supply. In this project work water supply was planned to rural areas surrounding Melkote, Mandya district using Geo-Spatial techniques in order to supply safe and wholesome drinking water to rural communities. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and LANDSAT satellite image were used in planning Water supply Scheme.
