Urban flooding is a modern-day problem that many towns and cities experience when the drainage infrastructure in place is unable to sustain continuous rain. The existing drainage system is unable to deliver enough water flow under harsh weather conditions, resulting in water piling on road pavements. In this study we have taken Tilak Nagar locality of Indore city as a study area, since it experiences water logging problem in the monsoon season for almost every rainfall events. 39 years Rainfall data was taken from Tehsil office Indore, from which Intensity-Duration-Frequency curve is plotted for various return periods and a time series is generated for the rainfall events with 5-year return period. Arc-GIS software is used for mapping the study area and to generate digital elevation map, subcatchments, watershed delineation map, and slope of above study area. Simulations of water runoff quantity and quality in the given study area are performed using the software Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). It has hydraulic modelling capabilities for routing runoff and external inputs through a network of pipes, channels, storage/treatment units, and diversion structures in the drainage system. The design of Tilak Nagar locality drainage system is done in this way in order to reduce urban floods. For flood management, new drainage system components are designed and sized accordingly. From the results we can conclude that the designed network is sufficient for extreme rainfall events and can easily carry the design flood.
