A radio access network (RAN) is an essential part of a wireless telecommunications system that employs a radio connection to link specific devices to other parts of the network. The RAN connects user apparatus such as a cell phone, computer or any remotely operated device via a wireless or fibre backhaul linking. This connection links to the main network which is responsible for subscriber data position and other functions. The RAN also known as the contact network is the radio portion of the cellular network. Cells which are small land areas make up a cellular network. At least one radio transceiver serves a cell though cell locations are frequently served by three.
