Abstract

Amputation is done commonly in Traumatic conditions such as crush injuries, where there is extensive tissue damage especially to the blood supply. As a surgical procedure, it is used to manage pain or a disease progression in the affected limb such as malignancy or gangrene. Usually medical treatment aims at prevention of any amputation. If preservation is not possible, amputation is done. It causes psychological trauma to the person and family involved. It is the responsibility of the nursing staff to prepare them for surgery and rehabilitation.
